Quick Update

by Bron Skinner 7. January 2010 01:16
It's been another long while since I've updated my blog. I suppose I'm not much of a blogger. Don't get me wrong, I like to brag about what I've done (in all honesty), but I don't find the enthusiasm it takes to sit down and initiate the act of blogging.

I've continued work on the latest project for SCBT (the Bank) and am nearing our initial project demo scheduled for the 15th of this month. Only a ~week left to finish things up on my end. I can't release much information about the project but I will say it's been yet another huge learning experience and is to date the most complex project I've had the opportunity to work on.

We're leveraging Microsoft’s Silverlight technology as our primary platform which continues to both excite and stress my mental faculties. On one hand you are able to build a next generation business application with a media rich UI and strongly typed set of business objects and logic all tied nicely together with RIA (Rich Internet Application) Services and WCF, but on the other hand I feel bound by the technologies youth. Specifically, there are many older technologies that can work congruently (and often are by default expected to by the masses) such as ASP.NET 2.0+ apps and SSRS or WinForms and QuickBooks – but Silverlight is still too young it seems to have many of the now mainstream support methods for effectively tying technologies together. I will say however, that the Silverlight team (not to mention many other 3rd party enthusiasts and companies) are working to bridge gaps, but the question of what gaps are in need of bridging still remains. If no one wishes for (or more effectively realizes the potential in) the marriage of two or more technologies, will those parties with the capabilities to tie them together spend the resources to do so?.

I’d like to think I’m helping blaze a trail, set a stake in presenting the world a door to potential..

That being said I’ll step off my soapbox and get back to work.

About the author

A Web Developer with a keen artistic sense, I’ve spent the last couple years working with predominantly Microsoft-based technologies developing web applications. The majority of this time has been spent building applications with SilverlightTM that forward some rather unique approaches to interface design. I am currently working full time.
